Movies Inc Calallen - Cine 6 was a popular movie theater in Corpus Christi on South Staples Street. But did you know that it started as Deux Cine in 1968 with just two screens?
The 4th of July weekend was supposed to be the peak of the summer movie season, but theaters across the country have been closed for months due to COVID-19.

The Century 16 site on Cinemark's website and online ticketing site Fandango previously had screenings of older films listed as of July 3, but as of Wednesday, the online sites no longer show the listings. The Times made several attempts to contact Century 16 executives, but did not receive a response.
The local movie theater chain Movies Inc., with two locations in Aransas Pass and Calallen, has been open since mid-May after Gov. Greg Abbott set guidelines for movie theaters to reopen. Theater co-owner Zach Farnsworth said the theater hasn't been busy since it reopened.
"We're not setting the world on fire," Farnsworth said. "There's a misconception that theaters are packed together like a restaurant or a bar, but we're nowhere near as busy."
For those concerned about personal space and social distancing, Farnsworth said some theaters in both locations have more than 200 seats. He said that with an average of 10 people at a show, you have a good chance of having the entire queue to yourself.

The theater averages less than 50 people on weekdays and about 100 on weekends, Farnsworth said.
"It's really just about getting employees back to work and giving customers something to do besides going to restaurants or the beach," Farnsworth said.
"We get several video-on-demand (film companies) releases that are released in theaters at the same time," Farnsworth said. "So we're getting a new product, but it won't be until the end of July. If everything goes well, they'll start bringing the big movies back to theaters."

It is the first movie theater to open on Aransas Pass in decades, and the first regional theater to open since Hurricane Harvey destroyed the Rockport movie theater in 2017.
The state-owned theater is Movies Inc.'s second. it will be. The first theater is in the Callallen district.
Mark Farnsworth, owner of Movies Inc., said he wants to open a movie theater in Aransas Pass because it's a good place to serve other communities that don't have a movie theater in the area.
"This area in Aransas Pass will (be) the center of the wheel — 10 miles to Portland, 10 miles to Port A, 10 miles to Rockport," Farnsworth said.

Farnsworth said the 20,000-square-foot complex will include six movie screens, a state-of-the-art sound and projection system, beer, wine and patio seating.
The World War II space theme was designed not only to entice patrons into Farnsworth's family theater, but also to pay tribute to his father who served in the military.
"We wanted to make this venue special. Not just for us, but for the community as a whole," Farnsworth said.
Aransas Gateway city manager Gary Edwards said the venue will serve about 50,000 people in the area and millions of tourists visiting, which will have a positive economic impact on the city.

"We hope it will help businesses in this local area," Edwards said. "It will (also) help with the sales (income) tax. We estimate a fair amount."
The theater will screen six films in its opening week. Films include "Uncut Gems", "Jumanji: The Next Level", "1917", "Ford vs. Ferrari", "Underwater" and "Like a Boss".

"It's all about timing," Farnsworth said. "You have to think about what everyone wants and what you need to do financially."
Despite the closure of Film Inc. for six weeks, Farnsworth said it wasn't the right time to reopen because new movies won't hit theaters until mid-July.
"They're not going to release anything until more theaters open, because movie studios lose a lot of money," Farnsworth said. "So they want more theaters to open until they release something big."
Farnsworth said that when theaters reopen, they will have to replay old movies until new ones come out.
