Ukraine moved closer to adding more modern U.S. fighter jets to its air force this week after U.S. lawmakers agreed to pay for U.S.-trained pilots for the F-15 and F-16.

F-16 To Ukraine

The US Congress this week approved a national defense authorization bill containing a $100 million amendment to help Ukraine rid itself of its old Soviet-era technology military hardware, which currently includes MiG-29s and Sukhoi jets.

"Ukrainian pilots will learn to fly F-15 and F-16 fighter jets in the United States," Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andrei Yermak said on Saturday.

"This amendment to the US defense budget bill for fiscal year 2023 has the support of the House of Representatives and plans to allocate $100 million for this purpose."

The development has reignited speculation that Ukraine could acquire F-class fighter jets from the United States or Poland that can operate F-16s as well as Soviet-era MiGs.

There have been previous calls for warplanes and other military aid, notably from British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

But Washington has so far been cautious about sending equipment to Ukraine because it fears Ukrainian forces could use American weapons to attack Russian territory.

The only known deal so far collapsed in March, when Poland said it would transfer its MiG fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for the US replacing the F-16s, but Washington refused.

Training will not start immediately. The US Senate will not vote on it until September, but the law still needs to be passed, and basic training for the F-15 and F-16 will last at least three months.

Since the beginning of the war, Kiev has sought better aircraft to compete with the more advanced Russian air force.
